Your social media posts are the glue that binds together the networks. Without a sharing your content and linking back to your site, it's relatively pointless to expect yourself to earn an income with social media tools. But you knew that, right? The hard part is how to create a short bio that is welcoming, engaging, professional and memorable all at the same time, usually in very few characters. Can it even really be done? And can you really fill your social media pages with content that will please your audience while still bringing them back to your site to create sales?
But of course it can! And of course you can! Because in reality, once you have readers or buyers on your main site, they can learn all about who you are and why you do all you do on your about or start here page. The real purpose of social media is to network readers from social to site and there is where the magic (read: sales) happen!
So to rock out your social media posts you're gonna need a few things!
1 | You need a social media profile!
This is one of those "duh" moments, I know. But believe it or not, not everyone is on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. As a result, you'll have to accept that your personal FB page isn't going to cut it if you want to rock your social skills. Sign up and create a page or make a business Twitter account. Instagram makes it pretty easy to toggle accounts now so hop over and reserve your business handle now.
2 | You need a content calendar.
A content calendar is like an editorial calendar but for things that don't go on your website. Although I don't always follow through 100%, I try to use the 60/40 split on social media, meaning I share 60% of content from other creative's and only 40% of my own.
Think of everything you usually share on social media. Do you retweet on Twitter a lot? Add it to your content calendar. Do you spend at least 20-30 minutes rePinning posts from others in your industry? Great! Note the Pins performing well and add them to your content calendar to be shared on other social platforms. Just don't forget to list your own shareable content in there too.
3 | You need a way to share all your content.
Once upon a time I used HooteSuite for Twitter, the in house Facebook scheduler and Pinned directly to Pinterest when I remembered. I left notes in my planner to retweet and to rePin or repost and I was a mess. Seriously. All of 2015 I would swear I was going to clean up my act but I didn't want to spend money on something I could do myself.
Guess how many hours I lost that I could have used for content creation, networking, building my portfolio or spending time with my family? Too many to count. On Sunday I would sit down and pull up my sites in a mad dash to get everything done and then... crickets.
Finally I broke, dropped the $9.99 to have a Buffer pro plan and rediscovered what lazy Sunday was all about. Trust me when I say that a lazy Elle is a happy Elle.
Buffer allows me to schedule everything from my content, retweets, Pins from any site to My UBC posts and Twitter chats. Seriously, the best $9.99 I spend a month (after my Starbucks fix) has been on Buffer.
Now that you've got this all together and you're ready to rock, it's all about making the time to do it. Now some creative's swear by once a month batching but I don't care for that. I fill up my content calendar once each week and then take the time to get it all scheduled on Sunday night. Because of the Buffer extension for Google Chrome, it takes me around two hours to load in my 100 posts per social account. Since Twitter chats are always at the end of the week on Friday, I wait to script and load them until Wednesday or Thursday. That way I'm not eating my 100 tweets with those posts during the week and can drop more shareable content instead.
Because Pinning is part of my Lazy Sunday routine, I load to Buffer as I Pin. Easy peasy!
After a few weeks this all becomes routine, so if it seems daunting now, just stick it out a little longer and the reward will be well worth it.
