That's right, you read that right. Stop. Just stop. Right now.
See, here's the thing about social media: you can't control it. And unless someone makes you the CEO of Facebook or you find a way to cult brainwash the heads over at Twitter you will never be able to control it. The new Instagram policies have proved that. And everyone plus their brother flipped out and spammed everyone with "enable notifications" posts. Do you know what I did to those people who shared that? I unfollowed them. Why? Because I don't do spam. And that's really all it was.
You see, I do a million things a day and about half that million relate directly to using my phone. I don't have a home phone and I am out and about a lot of the day. I do not want to enable notifications so that my phone beeps at me every time someone I follow posts on social media of any kind. Not only does that drain my patience but also my battery. Ain't nobody got time for that (dude, you guys, do people even still say that anymore? Well I'm bringing it back then ;) )
The point is that I don't need the constant interruption when Sally releases a new blog post or when Jen shares her kid eating a Popsicle. Floor starters, at the time those annoying dings come in I am most likely cramming a Popsicle down my own kids throat in order to release a new blog post. Second, because if I want to know about it, I'll go visit her site or social media page on my own time.
But back to my original point: You can't control social media.
If you're attempting to build a successful enterprise as a solo or creativepreneur, you need to focus on that which you can control: Your website content and your newsletter. One-on-one engagement is where your money comes from and even if you're using an income generating site like LikeToKnow.It, or Shopify, people will still be able to find you if you're creating the content they love.
Think about it this way; when you want to see what your bestie is up to so you can see if she wants to go grab coffee and gossip, you don't check her social media page first. You call or text her. The same rule applies in business. If I want to plan a perfect weekend getaway wardrobe, I will hit up my favorite bloggers sites directly before even heading to see if they have offers on social media. I may even reach out and ask where she bought that amazing scarf via email and never even look at her Instagram.
I can't be the only one here, amirite?
The amount of content pushing product and page views I see on Facebook, Twitter and IG baffles me. Sometimes I do click those links and I usually find that when I land on their page, there is little of value there and I click out to head somewhere where I can get valuable information. This results in that blog or website spiking in bounce rate and getting few to no sales. And if your goal is to generate sponsored for your blogs? You can't possibly make a more fatal mistake.
Now I am in no way saying you should bail on social media, those network's are excellent tools. But you should never put all your elephants on one bicycle.
You're a boss. Be a boss. Serve your meat and potatoes directly to the table you're wanting that big tip from. Save the salad for social media.
