How to Start A Blog (The Truth)

There is only one simple truth to "how to start a blog": Anyone can do it. 

And I mean anyone. Seriously, do a quick search of Bloglovin' or Stumble Upon and you can find blogs about everything under the sun. Even Tumblr is considered a blogging platform now (why?!?!). 

So as long as you have an email address, congratulations, you can start a blog!

Yes, really. That's it.

any fool with an email address can read these posts and start a blog. This bogs down the internet in ways most people don't seem to grasp. I know that these bloggers are trying to share the wealth of knowledge that they have built over their time blogging but in reality, no one (and I mean no one) is going to share all their trade secrets on how to start a successful blog. 

Now I didn't say it would be a good blog, or a clever blog or even a relevant blog. I said it would be a blog. That's what these posts are about right? Choosing your platform and signing up. "How to start a blog". These posts are all over my Pinterest feed and they make me so mad!

Why? 

Because as I said, any fool with an email address can read these posts and start a blog. This bogs down the internet in ways most people don't seem to grasp. I know that these bloggers are trying to share the wealth of knowledge that they have built over their time blogging but in reality, no one (and I mean no one) is going to share all their trade secrets on how to start a successful blog. 

Again with the why?

Because we're in the business teaching people how to blog for business and sharing every last bit of knowledge would basically be giving our business away for free. 

Yes, there are some absolutely amazing badass blogger bosses out there who are rocking the shit out of their business while also sharing a lot of info on how you can do the same. But trust me when I say that no reputable business babe is going to write a "how to start a blog" post and expect you to take it seriously. What the best of the best (XOSarah, byRegina, Melyssa Griffin) are going to do is show you how to start a blog. By creating killer eCourses, writing stellar eBooks and sending out amazing newsletters. Yes, they do give away a lot of their know-how (which is basically how I learned everything I know. True story). Yes, they offer unique and creative content on their blogs. And you know what? They're giving their readers valuable information on how to run a business while, in fact, running a business themselves. 

Some people define their success by how much money they make or how many page views they receive each week. Me? I rate it by feedback. How many people are sharing my content or engaging with me via my comments section or social media. The numbers don't matter to me because I get that the web crawlers, bots and spammers are taking up a nice chunk of them. My aim has never been and will never be to generate numbers. It is however to put as many eyes on my content as possible. 

What's the difference, Elle? 

I'm glad you asked my friend. Let me tell you: 

The bloggers who are out there sharing their ridiculous "how to start a blog" posts are looking at numbers each week. I don't see numbers when I look at my stats. I see people. I see the stay at home mom who dreams of turning her planner sticker Etsy shop into a webstore and supporting her family. I see the 9-5 accountant who really, really wants to teach people how to manage their finances n a more intimate level and be her own boss. I see the artist who wants to share her creativity with the masses. Numbers can start a blog but people are what makes it grow. I can't help numbers. But women who want to grow a small business? Now there's a face to a number and I can begin the journey of guiding them into becoming a bosslady. 

So why did I title this post "How To Start A Blog"? 

Truthfully? SEO purposes. These posts on creating a blog do really well on social media platforms (I'm looking at you Pinterest!) as well as rank high on Google searches. As I said, I'm all about putting eyes on my posts. Ultimately, yes, I want to make money. And I know damn god and well that building trust is essential to doing so. But the truth is that some of my clients and my so-called competitors have become some of the best (online) friends I have or ever will have. 

To successfully "start" a blog you're going to need a plan
