Over the years marketing has become a contest, may the brightest and boldest survive. The rest get flushed. And worse yet, people will pay big money to let the big dogs market with the most amazing content you have ever seen while those maybe just starting out get looked over because they just don't have the flash and glitter.
Todays world of small business has been taken by storm and people will do just about anything to pick up the next gig.
When I fist started my design business, I marketed with blog posts, social media (linking to my site) and, most importantly, word of mouth. Word of mouth marketing brought me in over 10 clients in my first 6 months of business. I did good work, i worked cheaper than most and I knew what the hell I was doing. These things made my services more valuable than those with the flashy online billboards.
When you have spent as long as I did out of practice and out of touch with your business, you'll start to find it more and more difficult to rebuild your brand. This is the issue I am currently facing and, trust me, the struggle is real. After many months away, I am having to establish trust through consistency with my readers. And that, my friends, is hard! Still, considering all the problems I recently faced, this task feels pretty light.
So what do I need to be focused on?Read More
Automation is a Hustler's BFF. No joke. Without it I would probably never get anything else done. Any fool with an email address can read these posts and start a blog. This bogs down the internet in ways most people don't seem to grasp. I know that these bloggers are trying to share the wealth of knowledge that they have built over their time blogging but in reality, no one (and I mean no one) is going to share all their trade secrets on how to start a successful blog.Read More
The wheel was invented in 3500 B.C. I can't math so I don't know how many years ago that is but I do know that our species as we know it didn't even exist then. And we (that is, humans) have been improving it and finding a million other uses for the wheel. If generations of homo sapiens can continuously re-imagine the wheel then you can re-imagine an idea and make it better than anyone has ever seen.Read More
Ahhh, the ever elusive "rest". What is this rest and where is it found? Can anyone have some or is it reserved for the uber rich who have all the time in the world? Rest, it's such a funny word, so hard to come by and so, so, so important to include in your life.Read More
It's been awhile, hasn't it?
While I could go on and on all day long (and turn this post into a self absorbed novel that I am 100% sure no one would finish reading) about the why I have been absent, I'll boil it all down to this: LIFE! It does happen folks! And I decided to write this post about how I cope with the life struggles that happen and how it affects my business in hopes of possibly helping others when their own struggle gets very, very real.Read More
Hashtags used to be the stupidest thing I had ever heard of. It seemed silly to me to put a pound sign in front of a word and call it a "link". But then I started reading about them and learning more about how they can be beneficial to blogging and building a following.
Hashtags are silly. And they do make you use an extra step in your process. But they work. And this post is all about which hashtags I use to generate the most views/engagement.Read More

Welcome back readers! It's time for your daily dose of "Blogging with Elle" (I'm not really calling it that, I was going for an Ed McMahon approved intro. But seriously... That is a pretty catchy name) Today I want you all to stop publishing your blog posts. Well, until you hear what I have to say anyway. But yeah, stop right there. Fingers away from the mouse. Listen up. I've got 4 really important things you need to be doing before I can release you back into a publishing frenzy. Are your fingers off that mouse? Are you ready to hear what I have to say? Awesomesauceum. Let's get you back to those posts!Read More
Now that I have talked your ear off earlier this week about newsletters and some alternatives for sending them I am going to go ahead and tell you about the 3 things your newsletter (for those if you who still send them, hey I'm trying fir a full no newsletter conversion here ;P ) needs, after you've plugged in you main post content.
You see, a lot of bloggers make the mistake of knowing content is king and skimping on the other extremely necessary things your readers want to see in a newsletter. That's not entirely wrong, of course. Content really is king. But even so, there are a few things you can do to ensure your readers are opening those emails and clicking over to your site.Read More
There are two kinds of people who blog: those who live and die by their newsletters and those (like yours truly) who find them to be nothing but an inconvenience. And then there are those of you reading this post because you haven't chosen to yay or nay a newsletter for your own blog yet.
And to those of you still on the fence, I want to just let you know that it's ok. I was once exactly where you stand. I too was once devouring posts on newsletters hoping to understand the benefits of creating a newsletter and where I would find the time to put one more thing together.
If you spend 30 seconds on Pinterest looking up newsletters you will fall prey to information overload, just as I once did. Although this post will provide you with my thoughts on newsletters and the alternatives to sending one out, ultimately you have to make the choice yourself.Read More
